It is critical for interpreters to hear the spoken words. Poor quality sound makes the difference between an accurate interpretation, or a poor rendition of what was said. Interpreters are not in liberty to guess what has been spoken. We render in another language what is said in the first language.
The consequences to a faulty interpretation can be detrimental, and in some cases may cause legal issues. In a deposition, the interpreter must accurately hear what the witness and attorneys are saying; otherwise, the interpreters rendition may have legal repercussions. I always check my audio before starting a Remote Video Conference, and make sure others can hear me clearly.
